Time for an update on my heavy rotation playlist, called “Aardvark.” Again, these are organized by numbers of plays.
“We Can Be Anything” by Baby Queen
(Apple, Spotify)
This is still on here from last time because it is just so pure in a message, music, floaty kind of way.
“She Calls Me Daddy” by KiNG MALA
(Apple, Spotify)
I so love the song. It’s a blow right in the fuck yous to the straight men of the world, and it’s also pretty sexy. A whole mood.
“Cool about it” by boygenius
(Apple, Spotify)
This is such a smooth song, and I do love how the three of them switch off. It’s so poignant, and beautifully done.
“Cynical” by Emei
(Apple, Spotify)
The melody, the singing, and yes, the subject (what the hell am I doing with my life?) all appeal to me. Not sure this one will last a long time, but it’s a fun song to tap along to, too, so maybe. “Overthinking, overdoing, over it all.”
“Afilando Las Tijeras” by Tribade
(Apple, Spotify)
I have a whole post about Tribade on here, but this is my favorite song of theirs, it’s hard hitting and so very full (especially if you speak Spanish) and very punk.
“Zero Feelings” by Zoe Clark
(Apple, Spotify)
A middle finger to today’s “feel everything” culture. “‘Cause I like how I’m so self-sufficient/You don’t know what you’re missing”
“Alphas” by Dope Saint Jude
(Apple, Spotify)
Now this is a wicked, sexy song. “Now I’m a feminist I see your inner beauty/But I’ve also seen that ass and let me say that you a cutie/I’m not just about the booty girl, tell me your dreams/We can manifest together while I’m making you scream”
“as good a reason” by Paris Paloma
(Apple, Spotify)
“Every time you are succeeding/There’s an old man somewhere, seething/And spite’s as good a reason to take his power” And the music is good, too.
“what it means to be a girl” by EMELINE
(Apple, Spotify)
Oof. The lyrics on this one, firmly in the “men are the actual worst” genre, are pretty biting, even if the song is not terribly deep. “It’s psycho, we’re living in a world/Where I get into clubs/Because I’m hot as fuck/But I don’t trust what’s in my cup/That’s what it means to be a girl”
“Blush” by Wolf Alice
(Apple, Spotify)
This is a song to put on and lean back with your eyes closed and the volume up. Just let yourself drift. (Here’s a video of them playing this song live in Glastonbury.)
“Diseased” by Baby Bugs
(Apple, Spotify)
Kind of a baby doll voice but the lyrics belie that. I haven’t listened to any other music by Baby Bugs, so this may be their deal? But I do love this song.
“Hole in My Head” by Laura Jane Grace
(Apple, Spotify)
Saw Laura Jane Grace in concert, and this is a good example of her energy and style. Also, I find myself singing along to the chorus very loudly in the car. Song is short, like the best punk songs. Get in, deliver the blistering message, get out.
“Cvnt” by Sophie Hunter
(Apple, Spotify)
So, I have listened to some other music by Sophie Hunter, and dude, she’s a lot in the best way. I have to admit I love this song because she says “cunt” a lot. Like a lot a lot. Unapologetically. I like unapologetic people.
“Nails” by Call Me Karizma
(Apple, Spotify)
Sexy song. That’s enough, right? “If you’re gonna hurt me, hurt me/I feel your nails in my back”
“Ruin My Life” by Zoe Clark
(Apple, Spotify)
Zoe Clark’s second entry on this list is a delightful song about just wanting to have the thing you know is bad for you. “Baby, come back to me/I want you to ruin my life/I want you to fuck up my nights.” Yeah, some days I am here for this.
“Spiral City” by CARR
(Apple, Spotify)
This is a fun song, if a bit… well, not terribly feminist, maybe? But I’m a basic person, and the end where she messes up and then apologizes… in a British accent? I died. Then played it again.
